The last couple of weeks something amazing started to happen for fans of heavy music here in Greece.
Being in my mid 20s, I have never really watched a rock band become well-known almost overnight because of an album, the way Nirvana did it in 1991. And for greek rock bands, I dont think this has ever happened.
Well, until this:
This is Villagers of Ioannina City. They released their first full length album ‘riza‘ in April 1st.
Since then, chaos occured. Even though they created the band in 2007 and recorded a promo CD in 2010, I certainly didn’t know them until these last couple of weeks. But, after nearly half of my Facebook friends I share a common taste in music with, have posted it on their wall, I knew that something is going on. And ‘something is going on’ is something I haven’t ever experienced, as far as greek heavy music goes.
This youtube video had almost 25,000 views in 1.5 month. That number may seem insignificant to an American individual, but here, it’s something that really stands out. Yesterday an old friend, that I haven’t talk to for over a year, called me just to make sure I have heard of them. That’s crazy! I really hope that eventually the Villagers of Ioannina City Bandcamp website will rank higher in Google Searchs than the wikipedia link for the actual city of Ioannina.
I haven’t listened to the whole album yet, but I will definitely do, as soon as
procrastination my busy schedule allows it. The song itself is pretty awesome. Nothing, not even the band’s name could have prepared me for this. A crazy combination of heavy rock and traditional music from Ipiros. I will try to describe it better if I make review of the LP, but for now you can settle with the comment of a youtube user that won the Internets for May:
“Hepirotic psy-stoner ingeniousness”
Boy I’ m excited…
